Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) was carried out to study systems containing gold atoms, organic ether (oligohydroquinonyl ether terminated with a thiol group) and organic solvents. The components in the simulated system are very different in size and chemical nature. Our simulation showed that the reproduction of the macroscopic experimental phase separation, properly dividing the polymeric molecule into beads, selecting the size of gold bead, and choosing the appropriate interaction parameters between beads are crucial. In addition, the solvent effect was the dominant factor for the formation of spherical aggregates of Au atoms and organic ether molecules. We report the interaction strengths between the solvent and gold clusters. Our work has demonstrated that DPD methods can be applied to the study of complex meso-scale systems.  相似文献

Abstract. The larvae of the antlion Euroleon nostras are pit-builders, constructing pitfall traps in loose sand. The number of pits and the pit diameter are recorded when larvae are kept in substrates with different particle sizes. The most convenient pit-building sand fractions are two fractions with fine sand (≤ 0.23 mm; 0.23–0.54 mm). The largest pits are constructed in sand with a particle size of 0.23–0.54 mm. In this sand fraction, larvae of all three instars most readily build pits. No pits are constructed in sand with a particle size greater than 1.54 mm. First- and second-instar larvae avoid building pits in substrates of particle size 1–1.54 mm, but third-instar larvae construct pits in this sand fraction. It is assumed that the antlion is capable of distinguishing between substrate types and this hypothesis is tested by giving larvae the choice of building a pit in one of four particle-size fractions. Larvae of all three instars prefer to build pits in the fraction with a particle size of 0.23–0.54 mm. Only third-instar larvae build pits in all four fractions, but only occasionally in the coarser fraction.  相似文献

In laboratory experiments, blackfly larvae collected from a lake outlet, a woodland and a meadow stream were tested for size selection of latex beads of < Ito > 100 μm diameters. 3 suspensions of varying proportions for each size category were supplied to these blackfly larvae in common experiments. Comparisons between the size frequency distributions of particles supplied and the particle compositions in the larval guts showed intra- and interspecific differences and were quantified by calculating Jacobs' electivity index. In all species selection of larger particles increased with the larger larval instars. Although there was a positive selectivity of small particles in some cases, the ingested proportion of large particles increases volumes and biomasses of gut content and may be more important for larval growth than small particles.  相似文献

Yeast submitochondrial particles, in a Pi- and NADH-dependent reaction, produced low concentrations of free ATP in the absence of added ADP. This formation of free ATP, as measured by the luciferin-luciferase method, was strongly stimulated by oligomycin. For maximal stimulation, oligomycin was to be added not earlier than 5–10 min after the addition of NADH. Upon addition of antimycin or FCCP the system was completely inhibited. The amount of free ATP formed corresponded to one-third of the amount of bound ATP in submitochondrial particles. The stimulatory effect of oligomycin disappeared if the submitochondrial particles were spun down after oligomycin stimulation and then resuspended in the reaction medium, whereas submitochondrial particles with no oligomycin added initially were stimulated by oligomycin after the same procedure. A different picture emerged with addition of ADP. If the submitochondrial particles were preenergized with NADH in the presence of oligomycin before the addition of ADP the formation of free ATP upon subsequent addition of ADP was inhibited by oligomycin. In the presence of oligomycin, but lacking preenergization with NADH, a stimulation of free ATP formation was achieved with added ADP. A possible explanation for the stimulating effect of oligomycin on ATP formation in the absence of added ADP is that it enhances the release of bound ATP in an energy-requiring process. The release of only about one-third of the bound ATP could indicate that one of three nucleotide-binding subunits involved in the mechanism of ATP formation by ATP synthase is in a state suitable for such an energy-dependent release of ATP.  相似文献

The particle size characteristics of suspended sediment are of fundamental importance in understanding its role in a variety of environmental processes. Existing knowledge concerning the spatial and temporal variability of the grain size composition of suspended sediment is, however, relatively limited. At the global scale, major contrasts may exist between individual rivers in the calibre of their suspended load and this may be related to a number of controls including climate, catchment geology and basin scale. Any attempt to understand the precise relationship between the grain size characteristics of suspended sediment and those of its source material must also take account of the selectivity of erosion and delivery processes. A local case study undertaken by the authors in the 1500 km2 basin of the River Exe in Devon, UK is used to illustrate the considerable spatial variability that may occur within a relatively small area and the complexity of the associated controls.Available evidence concerning the temporal variability of the grain size characteristics of suspended sediment emphasises the diverse patterns of behaviour that may exist and the complexity of the controls involved. In some rivers the sediment may become coarser as flow increases, in others it may become finer, whilst in others it may exhibit a relatively constant grain size composition. Data from the local case study in the Exe basin are again used to highlight the considerable diversity in response to changing discharge that may occur within a relatively small area.Any attempt to understand the dynamics of sediment movement through a river system must also take account of the potential contrast between the ultimate and effective particle size distribution of suspended sediment in response to aggregation. Results from the Exe basin study indicate that even in rivers with relatively low solute concentrations, almost an order of magnitude difference may exist between the median particle size associated with the ultimate and effective grain size distributions.  相似文献

A vertical plane 2D model has been applied to the Yoshii River estuary, Japan, as a means of simulating the process of sedimentation. The current velocity and isohaline distributions were well reproduced in the estuary and the model simulated the concentration distribution of suspended solids for 8 particle size classes by using a transport equation based only on physical processes. The changes of the particle size distribution in surface water were well reproduced by the model. The vertical velocity component plays an important role in the behaviour of suspended solids.  相似文献

1.  Filiform hairs of various lengths on the cerci of adult crickets vibrate in a sound field. These movements were measured with a photodetector for sound frequencies from 10 Hz to 200 Hz in the species Acheta domestica, Gryllus bimaculatus and Phaeophilacris spectrum.
2.  With low air-particle velocities, the hair shafts were deflected sinusoidally from their resting position, without bending or secondary oscillations (Figs. 2 A, 3 A). At higher velocities (from ca. 80 mm/s peak velocity, depending on the properties of the individual hairs), the shaft struck the cuticular rim of the socket in which the base of the hair is seated (Fig. 2B). This contact was made at an average angular displacement from the resting position of 5.16°±1.0°.
3.  The best frequencies of the hairs were found to be between 40 Hz and 100 Hz (Fig. 5A). The slope of the amplitude curve for constant peak air-particle velocity at frequencies below the best frequencies was between 0 and 6 dB/octave. Long hairs had smaller slope values than short hairs (Fig. 5C).
4.  At its best frequency the ratio of maximal tip displacement of a hair to the displacement of the air particles in the sound field was between 0.2 and 2. Only a small number of hairs (2 out of 36) showed tip displacements exceeding twice the air-particle displacement. The values of maximal angular displacement were not correlated to hair length (Fig. 5 B).
5.  The angular displacement of the hairs was phase shifted with respect to the air-particle velocity by 0° to +45° (phase lead) at sound frequencies around 10 Hz and by -45° to -120° (phase lag) at 200 Hz (Figs. 3C, 4B). At a particular frequency long hairs tended to have larger phase lags than shorter hairs (Fig. 5D).
